Our Story
Millie’s sits in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Washington, DC at 4866 Massachusetts Avenue NW. The building originally served as a 1930s gas station and later became the neighborhood hub we know and love. Today, Millie's is a bright, coastal-inspired family-friendly restaurant, blending its historic charm with a relaxed New England atmosphere.
Who is Millie?
Mildred Carpenter Jewett, lovingly known as “Madaket Millie,” was born on Nantucket in 1907 and spent nearly her entire life on the island, leaving only 10 times in 83 years. Though she was known for her no-nonsense edge with adults, Millie had a soft spot for children, animals, and her neighbors. Her small cottage along the marshes of Hither Creek served many roles over the years: an ice cream parlor, a refuge for injured wildlife, a dog training center, and even a U.S. Coast Guard lookout.
We honor her namesake through our flagship Millie’s restaurant in Madaket, Nantucket, where we opened in 2009 as a place for neighbors, families, and visitors to come together. That same spirit of community lives in our Washington, DC location today. Whether you’re seaside or cityside, Millie’s is about warmth, welcome, and the feeling of being part of something local and genuine.
